One Year at The Written Word (and a giveaway)!

September 13, 2007

It’s been a year since starting this book blog, which I did on a total whim. At the time, I was happily blogging about my experiences while in the process of adopting my daughter at my adoptoin blog. I loved the creative outlet that blogging provided and in addition to my regular visits to other adoption blogs, I stumbled on some really wonderful book blogs. It has been a great year blogging about books and it is wonderful to look back at this on-line journal at all the books that I have read, enjoyed and shared will all of you.

author Laura Fitzgerald, veil of roses, american author, women in Iran, women's fiction, Iran news, women's rights, middle east women, contemporary american fiction, book club romance, Wisconsin writers, Arizona writersTo celebrate the one year anniversary of my book blog, the very gracious Laura Fitzgerald, author of Veil of Roses, has offered a signed copy of her book to one lucky person!

If you haven’t heard of Veil of Roses, let me give you a bit of insight. The book is the story of  Tamila Soroush, a 27 year old women who has been sent by her parents to America to visit her sister. While here, Tamila’s sister and brother-in-law actively search the local Iranian community in hopes to find a nice Persian man for Tamila to marry before her visa expires and she has to go back to Iran. In the meantime, “Tami” becomes friends with a whole hodge-podge group of ESL students and feels the stirrings of her first love. She struggles with learning about a new culture, trying to handle her over-bearing but well meaning sister and begins to dream of a new life here in America.

I read this book only a few weeks ago and really enjoyed this sweet, endearing story. I’ve already handed it off to a friend (which of course is always the true sign of a good book).

If you would like to win a personalized, signed copy of Veil of Roses, please leave a comment here by midnight EST time September 22nd to be automaticaly entered into the drawing. For an even better chance to win, post about this contest on your own blog (linking back to this post) and your name will be entered twice! The winner will be announced on Monday the 24th. I will also be posting a Q&A session, where Laura shares some insight into the life of a writer, her next book and her own personal book club.

Oooh, a book blog, I came by way of your other blog. We adopted our little girl back in Feb 2006. I have yet to find the time to read through a whole book without having to put it down for weeks on end, and admire that you can do it so well. Maybe if I win this book I’ll be more inspired to find the time to read through relatively uninterrupted.

  17. September 14, 2007 10:10 pm

That book sounds really good- and I love a good read (if I’m without a book in hand, something in my world is just not right)! Count me in!

Ok Steph, I think I want in on the book club. I’ve been doing a lot of audio books and have been stalled since accidentally reading the entire plot and storyline of Peony In Love in a Washington Post review, whilst still in the first few chapters. Knowing what was coming next – before I even got there – ticked me off so much, I never went back to it. I’ve looked at a few of the titles here on your blog and many are books that I had already added to my Amazon wish list a while back because they looked interesting…. 🙂

So I want to start reading again. Where do I begin???

    Hugs, Heather
