“NO WAY!” @ BEA part 1

June 1, 2009

Welcome friends, fellow bloggers and newbies to my blog. After fully  recovering from Book Expo America, I’m back all this week to tell you about it!

I love the saying “No Way” and I find myself blurting it out often. Sometimes I say it when my daughter comes home with a funny story from school, or when my girlfriend gives me the latest gossip about her in-laws. While at BEA, I had plenty of “No Way” moments and thought I would share them all with you. Each day I’ll post a little snippet of information about my two days in New York City. It was filled with hours of browsing through books, cocktail parties, blogger meet ups, interesting panels and endless bookish fun. My camera was on the fritz, so I didn’t get tons of photos, but enough to post a couple over the next few days.

My first “NO WAY” moment is when I snagged an ARC copy of the Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins!

Catching Fire ARC

Due in bookstores this September, Catching Fire is the second book in a trilogy which started with The Hunger Games (my review to be posted soon) which I just finished last week.

Along with Catching Fire, I was able to get a copy of The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane  signed by author Katherine Howe (Katherine was super gracious! I showed up a bit late for her signing and even though she had packed her bags and was on the way out, she still signed a copy for me)!

There were also previews of a few books that will be coming out later this year/early next year. Unfortunately there weren’t any ARC’s of these titles up for grabs, but I am excited to tell all of you about them anyway!

First up is The Swan Thieves by Elizabeth Kostova, author of The Historian (which I read and reviewed here). I really enjoyed The Historian and cannot wait for her newest book to come out in January!! Plus, isn’t that book cover gorgeous?

The Swan Thieves: A Novel

And speaking of book covers, Audrey Niffeneger’s newest novel, Her Fearful Symmetry, doesn’t even have one yet – it’s completely under wraps until they get closer to the release date. Author of one of my favorite books, The Time Traveler’s Wife, I can’t wait to find out more about her newest title which is due in stores this September.

Her Fearful Symmetry: A Novel

I did get to see the wonderfully colorful drawings on the cover of The Mysterious Benedict Society and the Prisoner’s Dilemma, book three in Trenton Lee Stewart’s series for kids due out in October of this year. I read the first in the series (read my review here) and it will probably go down as one of my favorite reads this year.

Stop by tomorrow for another “NO WAY” moment when I tell you about how exciting it was to meet one of my favorite authors (hint: she writes YA and adult fiction – this lady is multi-talented)!

And stick around all week as I will be finishing up my series of BEA posts with a wonderful book giveaway!

I could also hardly believe that I snagged a copy of Catching Fire. Good to know that Her Fearful Symmetry wasn’t there – I thought I missed out.

Again, great to meet you. Next time we’ll have to chat more!

Great post. I don’t know when I’ll have time to write up BEA. I have to work all week.

  4. June 1, 2009 7:44 am

wow…I am sooo jealous 🙂 Looks like you had a great time. Thumbs up for the Catching Fire ARC.

    • June 1, 2009 7:46 am

I know, can you believe it! They only had a certain amount of ARC’s for Catching Fire so we had to stand in line for it. I heard from one blogger that she has almost finished it already and claims it is as good as the first!! We will see!

  5. June 1, 2009 7:51 am

Oh my gosh, I can’t believe you are fully recovered! I think you’re showing off now. I had a fantastic time at BEA. I loved meeting authors and publishers, but the real highlight was meeting bloggers like you. You totally rock!

    • June 1, 2009 7:54 am

I agree – it was so nice to meet the bloggers that I have been following and some new ones too!

I am so happy that you had a great time!! I am trying really hard to not be jealous of your Catching Fire ARC. AHHHH!!!!

Glad you made it home fine and remember BEA with such fond memories 🙂

I have to read The Hunger Games after all this talk about the next book 🙂

So glad you had a good time there Stephanie.

    • June 1, 2009 11:11 am

Yeah, definitely read Hunger Games – it’s fast paced and lots of fun!

  9. June 1, 2009 11:06 am

Looks like it was fun! I’ll have to be more aware of this thing next year. Maybe I’ll make the trek if it’s in NY again – not too far for me.

And nifty new plugin feature – ability to reply to comments? Cool. Is it part of this blog theme or a widget? I’m going to see if I can install this on my own hosted wp blog!

    • June 1, 2009 11:11 am

I just changed my theme, so maybe it’s only theme specific? Not actually sure. Pretty cool though! And you should definitely come next time. You’re in Montreal, right? Six hour drive TOPS into NYC!

even better – I can take a TRAIN! 😉 I ♥ trains. I think I might look into this for next year – depending on money of course. (Isn’t it always?)

Guess it’s the theme. But it is a way cool feature!

Hello Ms. Chan, I enjoyed hearing you on the panel at BookExpo. I had some “NO WAY” moments too. I hope I always do… Best, Mike

    • June 2, 2009 7:10 am

Thank you for stopping by the panel at BEA and my blog. I appreciate it!

  18. June 2, 2009 12:35 pm

I really must read The Historian. I know I am going to like it, as I started it and just never got around to finishing it! It wasn’t because I didn’t want to, I just got side-tracked. I am also looking forward to the Audrey Nieffenegger book, of course!

  19. June 5, 2009 9:03 am

I seriously drooled all over the S&S booth where they had the little sign about her fearful symmetry! The two guys standing there probably thought I was out of my mind! I’ve been excited about that book ever since i read the little mention in her FAQ! So excited, anyhow I came across this “cover” the other day not sure if it’s real but it’s rather beautiful! http://www.waterstones.com/waterstonesweb/displayProductDetails.do?sku=6590316 Maybe it’s the UK cover? I guess we will see!

    • June 5, 2009 9:17 am

Thanks so much for the link – I can’t wait either!! Too bad they didn’t have any ARC’s at BEA (they would have gone like hotcakes)!

  20. June 5, 2009 9:21 am

I know!! Maybe one of us will be the lucky one to win that arc or whatever that drawing was for!

  21. June 11, 2009 9:59 pm

No way!!! 😉 I’m glad to hear that Collins’ follow-up to The Hunger Games is just as entertaining. A co-worker snagged our one and only ARC at work, but I’m hoping to borrow it when she returns from vacation. I haven’t been this excited about a series in a long time.

I’m also thrilled to learn about Her Fearful Symmetry. Loved The Time Traveler’s Wife, so I’ll be anxious to get my paws on this one. It’s been far too long since TTTW!
