Did the cook accept his position in society? Did he fulfill his responsibilities despite the judge’s treatment? Why did the cook embellish the stories he told about the judge?

I got the feeling that the cook never really did accept his position in society – he was never happy and always looking to the past and what could/should have been. I may have taken that wrong but he seemed to be stuck in the past. However, I do think he fulfilled his duties to the judge and put up with a lot of disrespect from the judge – sad to say.

I actually felt great pity for the cook. The whole time he seemed to want people to admire him since his son was in the US. It was sad that he became so engrossed in his son’s life.

Overall I thought that the book was beautfully written, but very slow to read. I don’t think that I would recommend this book.
