Inheritance of Loss ? 1

February 12, 2007

Biju’s time in New York City is not what he had expected. How do the earlier immigrants treat him? How do the class differences in India translate into class differences in the US, where there were supposed to be none? Why was Saeed Saeed so successful in the US and Biju was not?

This is a great thinker question – why was Saeed Saeed so successful and not Biju – maybe because Saeed was willing to give up his “heritage” and become like anyone else??? Biju wanted to hold fast to more of the older traditions, ideas, etc. He wasn’t as willing to “fit” into this new culture.

I was thinking the same thing too–that Saeed Saeed attempted to assimilate in a way that Biju never did. But it also seemed like a question of motivation. Biju was in part living out his father’s dream, whereas Saeed seemed to be more driven by his own sense of adventure.

I agree with Melissa. Biju was living out his father’s dreams. He also never made an effort to connect with others in his new country
