Books play a major role in this novel. Margaret, for example, sells books for a living. Miss Winter writes them. Most of the important action of the story takes place in libraries. There are stories within stories, all intertwined. Discuss the various roles of books, stories and writing in this novel.

    One scene that comes to mind is when Margaret gets out one of Miss Winter’s books from the special cabinet and uses white gloves to hold the book while she reads it. I think it shows just how much she values stories that are told by others, and let the reader see into a little window of their own lives.
