Introducing the Everything Austen Challenge (with prizes)!
If you have been reading this blog for awhile, you know I have a fondness for all things Austen. There are plenty of books and movies available to satisfy any Austen fan. Whether it’s a novel about the Bennet sisters fighting zombies, a TV mini-series in which a modern day British girl swaps places with Elizabeth Bennet or Colin Firth’s unforgettable portrayal of Darcy, Austen is all around us. Even if you haven’t read any of Jane Austen’s novels, mostly likely you’ve seen some of the movies or heard about all the Austen-themed books available today.
I am so excited now to introducing my very first challenge!! The Everything Austen Challenge!
The details! The Everything Austen Challenge will run for six months (July 1, 2009 – January 1, 2010)! All you need to do is pick out what six Austen-themed things you want to finish to complete the challenge.
What is considered Austen-themed? Obviously, any of the books Jane Austen wrote herself count, so if you’ve been contemplating reading one of her novels, now is the time! Or, maybe watch the different movie versions of Pride and Prejudice. You could even try reading one of the many sequels written by various authors or listen to one in your car on your way to work. Truly, the list can be endless! All you need to do is pick six Austen-themed items to read and/or watch to participate. Note that you can mix it up a bit – maybe commit to watching three movies and reading two books – or if your TBR pile is huge, pick out six movies you would like to watch – YOU DECIDE!
Also, you can combine this with another challenge. For example, if you are going to participate in Carl’s RIP challenge this fall, maybe add Northanger Abbey to your list. Or read a couple books during the next Dewey 24 hour read-a-thon.
Here’s the most fun part – now you get to rifle through your bookshelf, DVD collection, or visit your local library or indie bookstore to find some Austenesque items!
How you can sign up! Grab one of the challenge buttons above and write a post detailing what six Austen-themed things you are going to do over the next six months. Then come back to this post and click on Mr. Linky. Then just link directly to your introductory post and not just to your blog’s home page. If you don’t have a blog but would like to join anyway, just leave a comment on this post.

Check back often! Everything Austen will officially begin on July 1, 2009 with my review Rude Awakenings of a Jane Austen Addict by Laurie Viera Rigler. On that date, I will put up a a tab at the top of my blog entitled Everything Austen. This is the place where a list of all the participants (along with links to your Everything Austen updates and posts) will be. This means that each time you have a post relating to the Everything Austen challenge (with the exception of your first sign-up post) you should leave a comment there with a link to your post. Be sure to check back often to see who else is reading and watching Austen!
Talk about it on Twitter! I’ll also be tweeting (my Twitter ID is @SWrittenWord) about the challenge using hashtag #everythingausten so make sure to follow me for updates and information.

I just watched Lost in Austen. Didn’t realize it was a miniseries, but thought it was a movie. Now I know why it was so long.

Oh wow… You’ll be my first reading challenge ot join 🙂 I will definitely be in on this one. I’ve been reading her books in order of publication, and have 2 left. OK! I can accidentally do six when I should have been making dinner…OK, that’s a bit of an overstatement, but seriously, figuring out how to copy the button will be the hardest part!
You should be able to right mouse click on top of the button here on my blog, then click on copy, then head back over to your blog and right mouse click and hit paste in the spot you want to button to appear. Does that make sense?

I’m pretty new to the whole challenge thing but I’m sure I can pull it off since I’m over halfway done with the VC Andrews one and that lasts till the end of the year so this should be no problem. Maybe now I’ll finally watch Lost in Austen. I just loved Gemima Rooper in Hex so I really want to see it. Yikes I looked at the website and holy crap there are a lot of people getting Jane Austen books. I’ll try to get the post up today or tomorrow.

This is a challenge I just can’t resist! I’m in, and will write a post for Mr. Linky within the next few days.
I don’t usually like to change my lists once I’m set, but since this challenge hasn’t officially kicked off yet, I’ve decided to let myself switch watching Bride and Prejudice for Becoming Jane for two reasons:
A. I have two much Pride & Prejudice on my list
B. I’m at the library, and someone got Persuasion when it was reshelved, but I managed to snag Becoming Jane, and since Bride and Prejudice was the one I was probably least excited about (though had they had Mansfield Park or Northanger Abbey in, I might have swapped Persuasion out for that), so out it goes.
I am excited by this challenge, I’m sure I won’t need the six months to complete. I may read and watch others that aren’t on my list. I know I will.
Sounds like a super fun challenge. I’m in.

This challenge sounds so fun! I’ll definitely be joining in. I went to look at my bookshelves to see what I already have (I’ve decided to include only things I haven’t read or watched before), and realized that I own entirely too many Austen-related or inspired items.
I noticed that you don’t have the Elizabeth Aston after-Pride-&-Prejudice novels on the list. Any reason for that (other than the fact that there really are too many Austen-inspired articles in the world to keep track of)?

I am officially entering! I could easily complete this within a month! Heck, for Jane, I’d complete within a week! I am really excited about this my very first reading challenge! I have loved Austen for years and have read all her books and seen all the movie adaptations already. I haven’t read all the sequels though. I have read a few Georgette Heyer ones, but I have found a couple of other ones that I want to try.

1. Introduce JASNA’s Juvenilia (JASNA-NY members 45 and younger) to the Wishbone adaptation of P&P and the BBC 1987 adaptation of Northanger Abbey this Sunday (7/12/09)

I’m going to re-read Jane’s 6 completed novels. I haven’t read them for many years, and I’m excited to read them again! I’ve already seen almost every movie ever made from a Jane Austen story, but if I find one I haven’t seen, and if I can get it from Netflix, I’ll watch it, too!

Even though the challenge is over, I’m going to participate on my own. For the record, I will read 2 books (Persuasion and Northanger Abbey) and watch 3 movies (Becoming Jane, Sense and Sensibility, P&P) and 1 mini series version (Persuasion). I just ran across this event. I’m currently doing the Period Drama Challenge as well. Such fun, and it forces me to finish books and relax in fron of the tv now and then. Love the site!

Like you said, it’s a little late to join the challenge, but after having encountered so many things Austen-esque, I’ve decided to include a few of her books on my TBR pile. (Credit my wife for tipping the scale after she included the “Book Club” movie on our Netflix queue.)
I’ll be starting with P&P in a few weeks, and then shortly after, picking up the zombie version (sorry, genre fiction is in my blood). But honestly, I don’t know how I’ve managed to get this far in life without having ever read an Austen book or an Austen-inspired movie – maybe it’s a guy thing. 🙂
I’m sure you’ll be reading my thoughts soon.

I just found this, but realized I’ve probably already completed the challenge. 😉 In the past few months, I’ve rewatched Persuasion 2007 (oh, so many times), Sense & Sensibility (Emma Thompson), Sense & Sensibility (the newer one), Mansfield Park (both of ’em), reread Persuasion, just finished reading None But You/For You Alone by Susan Kaye (Persuasion from Wentworth’s POV), Colonel Brandon’s Diary, Mr. Knightley’s Diary, Edmund Bertram’s Diary, Darcy’s Diary, Captain Wentworth’s Diary…
Oh well, Jane Austen and Outlander have happily gotten me through the LOST hiatus. 😉
I wish I had seen this last year!
